VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The trial for a bizarre murder case from March 2017 is underway in Virginia Beach court.
38-year-old Nicole Foxx is accused of stabbing and killing 65-year-old Richard Bielitz with a screwdriver.
During the first day of the trial, witnesses and detectives took the stand. The prosecution also showed video of Foxx’s conversation with detectives when she was brought to the police station.
This all goes back to March 17, 2017, when police were called to Oldwick Court, off of Princess Anne Road. There, they found Bielitz dead in his room.
Investigators believe Foxx was giving Bielitz a massage when he put a screwdriver to her throat. Some sort of struggle happened, and Foxx killed Bielitz.
The prosecutor says Bielitz was stabbed 40- 50 times with a screwdriver. The medical examiner says he likely died because of blood loss from all of the wounds.
In court, 10 On Your Side learned that Foxx and Bielitz lived in the same townhome with a few other roommates. Foxx often borrowed money from Bielitz, sometimes to fuel her drug addiction, other times to buy food or cigarettes.
Detectives say Foxx’s ex-husband had recently come to stay with her. She told him she killed Bietliz, and he is the one who called police.
The video of Foxx’s statement to police shows her repeatedly deny hurting Bielitz, even saying, “I didn’t hurt that old man. I didn’t do anything to that old man.”
In the statement video, the detectives repeatedly ask her if he was aggressive toward her or attempted to assault her. Foxx repeatedly denies those ideas.
She eventually flips her story, saying Bielitz did try to assault her, and she was defending herself.
Foxx was sobbing in the video, eventually saying to detectives, “I want to die. I didn’t mean to hurt him.”
She was emotional in the courtroom watching herself speak with detectives.
Multiple Bielitz siblings also watched.
The defense did ask the judge to reduce the charge from second degree murder to involuntary manslaughter. The judge denied that request.
The defense is expected to call at least two witnesses tomorrow.
