‘It would be a blessing’: Family seeks wheelchair-accessible van for son paralyzed in shooting

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — The day after Christmas 2020 was different from previous years for most because of the coronavirus pandemic.

For 26-year-old Christopher Lewis, it was different for another reason.

“I got shot in the car. I was paralyzed from the waist down,” Christopher Lewis said.

It was December 26 when the shooting happened on Rochambeau Drive in York County. Authorities were able to catch the person they believe is responsible, but Christopher Lewis’ life was changed forever.

Christopher Lewis was shot two times that night. He was paralyzed from the waist down.

“He’s here with me — that’s the best part. I still have him here with me,” said Justina Lewis, Christopher Lewis’ mother.

His parents have done the best they can picking up and moving 140-pound Christopher Lewis and his 40-pound wheelchair into their sedan. Between doctor’s appointments and other engagements, the family goes through the painful ordeal of moving him from the chair consistently.

More than six months after the incident, it’s starting to take a toll on them.

That’s why the family made a choice to turn to 10 On Your Side.

Justina Lewis is asking for help finding a wheelchair-accessible van so they can transport Christopher Lewis more easily.

“One of those accessible vans would be a blessing. Being able to just wheel him in and lock it down without having to move him again,” she said.

The Lewis family knows their lives won’t go back to normal, but they’re hoping a change in how they get around will bring back a sense of normalcy.

“If at all possible you could help even loan it to me it would be such a help… So if you have one you’re not using please please reach out to me,” Justina Lewis said.
