(NEXSTAR) — 24-year-old fencer Nick Itkin is celebrating his first individual medal win after taking bronze in men’s individual foil.
“Being able to leave with some hardware feels super special,” Itkin told us after the victory.
This is the Notre Dame graduate’s second-ever Olympic medal. He also won a bronze in 2020 as part of team foil.
“I started feeding off the crowd and then it turned into a super-special moment that I’ll never forget,” he added.
The two-time NCAA champion said he’s excited to see his sport continue to grow and find support in the U.S.
“I think it’s still growing day by day,” Itkin said. “I’m excited to see what the future has.”
The last time an American man won a medal in individual foil was 2016.
