(WJW) – Pole vault gold medal winner Katie Moon was aiming for another medal of that color.

Moon, who grew up in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, attempted to defend her Olympic title in Paris Wednesday after earning gold in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, but instead, took the silver.

The athlete was unable to clear the 4.9 or 4.95-meter bar after multiple attempts, so took second place to Nina Kennedy of Australia, who did clear 4.9. Alysha Newman of Canada took bronze. Even so, she was very happy with the experience.

“This was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. This is what I thought the Olympics would feel like ,” Moon said. “I’m just so happy I walked away with some hardware for the U.S.”

The 33-year-old attended Ashland University and studied fashion in Paris.

Moon competed against 19 other women in the finals.
