CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake officer was shot and injured Thursday night, and police have made an arrest in connection with the incident.
Police said the officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Police were called to the 1000 block of Seaboard Avenue around 11:15 p.m. Thursday for a report of suspicious vehicles.
When officers arrived on the scene, someone fired shots at them.
One officer was injured and taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
Seaboard Avenue was blocked off as police continued to investigate Friday morning. While WAVY News 10 was at the scene, our crew saw what appeared to be an unmarked police truck being towed away.
Police said 20-year-old Tre Von Price was arrested on Friday and charged with attempted malicious wounding, shooting at a vehicle, discharging a firearm with injury and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Chesapeake police said they have not ruled out the possibility of a second person who may have also fired shots. Until they can confirm Price fired the shot that hit the officer, police are charging him with “attempted malicious wounding.”
10 On Your Side obtained surveillance video of the scene as it unfolded Thursday night, as well as a police scanner audio recording. It helps piece together what happened.
Last week, cars in front of a Seaboard Avenue home were allegedly shot in a drive-by shooting. On Thursday night, the man associated with that house saw cars similar to those from the other incident drive by. He called 911.
In the surveillance video, one of those cars can be seen driving by at 11:14 p.m. After the man called 911, police responded, including a sergeant in uniform in an unmarked police unit.
Surveillance video at 11:17 p.m. shows at least two people come off the porch of a Seaboard Avenue home and fire several rounds. The video shows the gunfire.
After that, scanner traffic indicates the sergeant may have been struck by a bullet. He radioed saying he was getting shot at, and then said he’d been hit.
“Multiple shots fired on Seaboard Avenue,” he said. “I did not see a vehicle. They were somewhere on foot… over by the white building.”
Another officer can also be heard over the radio.
“We need medics now,” they said. “We have a sergeant hit. Send all available units.”
Chesapeake police believed they knew where they thought the gunfire came from. It didn’t take long for more officers to arrive and descend on the house in question, using a bull horn to order people out of the house through the front door with their hands in the air.
Some people in the house were taken for questioning.
Once 10 On Your Side saw the video and from where the shots were fired, we went back to the house to ask questions. Imani Perry was there.
“Yes, I heard it. What did I see? I saw nothing,” Perry said.
Meanwhile, some residents say they’re not surprised, but still worried about the frequent gunfire.
“’Not again,’ is what I thought,” said nearby resident Jaylene Martin.
“I stayed in my bed, and was reading in my bed, and I was not getting up. I was away from the window.
