NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police arrested a man wanted in several jurisdictions into custody on Friday after about a six-hour-long tactical situation.

Officials say they initiated a tactical situation at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Thimble Shoals Boulevard. Police said the call was in reference to a domestic-related incident.

After further investigation, police said around 5:30 p.m. they took the man into custody after he surrendered to police at a residence in the 900 block of Marcus Drive.

He was identified as 22-year-old Montez Tynes, of Surry. He had warrants out in Surry for robbery, strangulation and assault on family member and in Isle of Wight for intentionally prevent law enforcement officer from lawfully arresting, child abuse/neglect, disregard or elude law enforcement, reckless driving and driving revoked.

Police say he was also charged in Newport News with malicious assault, grand larceny of a vehicle, assault on family member, intentionally prevent law enforcement officer from lawfully arresting, possession of firearm by felon and child abuse/neglect.

Newport News police confirmed an incident on Omni Boulevard in the City Center area was related to the tactical situation. A spokesperson said the suspect was spotted in that area.

The department said reports going around social media about an active shooter in City Center were not true. They replied to a tweet with that information.
