NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A major department store is closing in MacArthur Center — and it’s a big loss for the mall.
Nordstrom announced Friday’s closing back in January. It opened for business in Norfolk 20 years ago.
Customers got free tote bags on Friday marking the store’s last day of business. The Nordstrom Cafe’ was a popular spot, with people lining up for one last meal.
Nordstrom will transfer its remaining stock to the Nordstrom Rack store near Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach, which remains open.
The closure impacts 85 non-seasonal employees at the Norfolk location. The space is actually owned by the City of Norfolk and Nordstrom’s replacement remains unknown.
In addition to the Rack store, the nearest Nordstrom will now be at Short Pump near Richmond.
The department store that has been around since 1901 is also closing its store at The Mall at Wellington Green in Florida.
“Each of our stores gives us the opportunity to build meaningful relationships throughout the local community, and that has certainly been the case in both Norfolk and Wellington,” said Nordstrom. “We appreciate the hard work of our employees here and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”
MacArthur has seen a lot of stores close since the beginning of this year, including stores such as William-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Aveda, Charlotte Russe and Yankee Candle.
