NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Poquoson man attempted to bring a loaded gun into Norfolk International Airport (ORF) on Thursday, says the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in a tweet.
According to TSA, this is the second gun caught at the checkpoint in just three days and the fourth gun this year. On Tuesday, a Virginia Beach man with a .380 caliber gun was stopped as well.
The traveler was stopped on Thursday by security when officers found the .22 caliber weapon in the man’s carry-on bag. The handgun was loaded with five bullets, including one in the chamber.
TSA reminds everyone that individuals who bring firearms to the checkpoint are subject to federal civil penalties of up to $13,000.
According to the TSA’s website, the typical penalty for a first offense of carrying a handgun into a checkpoint is $3,900.
According to TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein, airport police were contacted, responded to the checkpoint and detained the man for questioning. 10 On Your Side confirmed with the spokeswoman that he was cited on weapons charges.
There were no injuries.
