NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police say a 24-year-old suspect is now in custody after the murder of his father and another man on Tuesday night.

Officers found the two men, 58-year-old Dean Lamont Gethers and 46-year-old Christopher Rogers, shot at least once each inside a home in the 300 block of 36th Street around 9:45 p.m. after responding to a call for gunshots.

One man was pronounced dead on the scene. The other was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead there.

The suspect, Tavell Emanuel Gethers, was last seen leaving the 300 block of 36th Street around 9:49 p.m. wearing a red puffy jacket and camouflage face mask, police said.

Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, police said Gethers was taken into custody.

Gethers has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of use of a firearm and discharging a firearm within a dwelling.

Police are still investigating the shooting and have not released additional details.
