NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police responded to a shooting Tuesday evening near Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
Police say the shooting happened somewhere in the area of 40th Street and Killam Avenue, and the victim was able to get away to the 7-Eleven at 4720 Hampton Boulevard. Police got the 911 call around 8:10 p.m. and found the victim at the store with a non life-threatening gunshot wound.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
10 On Your Side is still working to find out more about the shooting, including suspect information. The shooting happened just three days after the start of the fall semester at ODU.
ODU Interim Police Chief Garrett Shelton confirms the victim was not a student.
“There are no students involved at this time.”
Garrett said ODU PD will up staffing on weekends, but the surrounding area is a challenge for the university.
“Those are the places that our students live in, those are the places that our students like to socialize in. We want to make sure that we provide as much safety as we can.”
ODU PD is also following leads in a vandalism investigation at the ODU bookstore early Monday morning.
The ODU crime log lists it as a burglary, but after reviewing the security camera video, Garrett said it is considered vandalism.
“We can say with 100% certainty that that individual never entered the bookstore.”
Garrett also cautioned students from posting on social media.
“What ends up on social media may not be exactly accurate.”
Owen Midegette and Austin Stewart, both sophomores, said the recent incidents near campus are a wake-up call.
“You kind of just have to enjoy college and not really think about it too much, but it’s really hard when you know people are always talking about it on social media and stuff.”
