NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Drivers experienced delays on I-64 eastbound in the city of Norfolk near Tidewater Drive Wednesday morning, due to a tractor-trailer crash.
The driver, 43-year-old Anthony Eley of Newport News, was charged with reckless driving, police said.
The east center lane, right lane and right shoulder were all closed and the east exit 277A was narrowed to traffic as a result of the crash.
According to Virginia State Police, at approximately 7:26 a.m., a semi-truck ran off the road and hit the jersey wall. The vehicle then caught on fire.
Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded to put out the fire and contain a fuel spill.
Eley was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Norfolk Fire-Rescue.
Crews also had to clear debris from the road. Images from the scene show the tractor-trailer was carrying soda cans, which spilled in the crash.
