SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — On Saturday afternoon in the pouring rain, instinct kicked in for Richard Pizarro when he saw a crash scene on the side of Route 58 in Suffolk.
“I noticed that everybody in the vehicle was in pretty bad shape, everybody was bleeding and hurt, and then I started pulling people out the vehicle,” Pizarro said.
Police say six people went to the hospital after the Sunday afternoon crash shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Route 58 near the landfill.
He said immediately he knew it was bad.
“I know one had a broken arm. The other lady that was in the passenger seat. I know her arm was amputated cause I seen it on the floor.”
But he wanted to help.
“I just started pulling people out of the vehicle there was two kids in the back seat, thank God they were in a seat belt and car seat, they were OK.”
He got most everyone out before police even arrived, except for one woman.
“Just from the impact it was horrible. I couldn’t get to her, but we were able to get to everybody else,” Pizarro said.
Police said four adults and two children were transported to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries at first, but have now been upgraded to stable condition.
“I was covered with blood, pretty much from head to toe before 911 arrived, and then they jumped on the scene and took care of the rest,” he said.
He said he’d do it again in a heartbeat
“I believe in karma and that’s why I always do good, because I would want someone, if that happened to me, to help me,” he said.
