HAMPTON, Va. (Release via Hampton University Athletics) – Ivan Thomas returns to his Hampton Roads roots as he was introduced as Hampton University’s new men’s basketball coach Wednesday at a press conference at the Hampton Convocation Center.
He scored his first victory by winning the press conference by outlining his vision for Pirate basketball, his priorities on-the-court and in the classroom, as well as his expectations for his players and staff.
Henderson Sr. recounted the job search and outlined the qualities that he and his staff were seeking for the next head coach of the program. Throughout the job search, Henderson Sr. and his staff were looking for a coach who could lead by positivity and empowerment, was highly organized with a thorough prep plan, accountability, had ties to the local community, and respected the history of the HU men’s basketball program.
When asked about the new hire Henderson Sr. stated, “In our conversation with Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley and administrative staff they feverously supported Ivan becoming a head coach. It was a thorough process and we have the right person for this job here at Hampton.”
The ceremony featured Darrell K. Williams, president of Hampton University who said “This is an exciting day certainly for Hampton University, our athletics department, our men’s basketball program, and the Hampton Roads area.”
Thomas, who becomes the 17th head basketball coach at Hampton University, is excited to be returning to Hampton Roads. The Norfolk, Va. native exclaimed, “This opportunity has led me back home to the 757 where I am proud to say I am the head coach of Hampton University, where the standard of excellence is an education for life.”
