PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Roads was treated to a picture perfect day for the April 8 solar eclipse.

Those able to step outside and take a safe look at the phenomenon did so locally on a beautiful afternoon, under mostly blue skies and a temperature of 70 degrees.

The rare celestial event was visible in our region from 2 p.m. until about 4:30 p.m., with the peak happening around 3:20 p.m. It was a partial eclipse here, with about 80% eclipse coverage.

From selfies in solar eclipse glasses, to images of the eclipse itself, this was a major photo op event, when done with proper safety precautions, of course.

Angela White was in Chesapeake taking photos of the eclipse on her telescope when she captured this incredible image of a plane passing in front of the disappearing sun. She was kind enough to share the photo with WAVY.

WAVY TV 10 Photos

WAVY had its own solar celebration, which included some special celestial treats…. and an appearance by an “astronaut.”

Some WAVY employees decided to take the day off to travel to an area in the path of totality. Here are some photos from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, which was part of a four-day celebration called “Solarfest.”

Thank you to all the viewers who shared their eclipse-related photos and video with WAVY!
