NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) — Cape Hatteras Secondary School’s DECA Club celebrated as three of their marketing students placed in the top 20 worldwide in the Community Giving category at a conference in California.

Kristin Bennett, Ann Lord and Emma Riggs presented a project to support children in the foster care system at the April 28 international competition. The project was very close to home for one of the girls as Lord herself experienced what it was like to be in the foster care system. The three competed against over 23,000 students at the DECA International Career Development Conference.

The DECA team collaborated with Dare County Social Services and local foster families to determine which care items were needed for various age groups. The team partnered with the community to raise funds and collect donation items to fill their backpacks.
