PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — With Memorial Day right around the corner, some drivers may be looking to fill up for their weekend plans. Recent data from American Automobile Association (AAA) shows those drivers may be in luck.
Local and national gas prices have been on a steady decline for the last few months. Experts expect those lowering numbers to continue into Memorial Day weekend, with some states even seeing prices below the $3 mark.
Virginia and North Carolina are seeing prices well below the national average, $3.60, which is worth cheering for.
As of Monday, May 20, Virginia’s average is $3.40, and North Carolina’s average sits closer to $3.35.
Weak domestic demand and oil costs being below $80 a barrel have both contributed to muted prices. The price decline is anticipated to continue.
