RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia House of Delegates has passed a bill repealing the recent changes made to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP), which provides free higher education to the dependents and spouses of qualified disabled military veterans.

The House passed HB 6003 on Friday, repealing changes made to the program making the eligibility requirements more strict for beneficiaries. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin released a statement in response to the passage of the bill.

“Thank you to Speaker Scott, Leader Gilbert, Chairman Torian, Delegate Cherry and the entire House of Delegates for unanimously passing a full, clean repeal and reversal of the eligibility changes to VMSDEP,” reads Youngkin’s statement in part. “Our veterans, first responders, and their families have spoken, and we have heard them.”

The Virginia Senate is set to vote on the bill on Monday, July 1, and it will go to Youngkin’s desk if they approve it. Youngkin has said he will sign the bill into law “immediately” after it does so.

This is a developing story.
