PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – I enjoy working with professionals who have years of industry experience. Every day I gain knowledge that will help me in my future career. It wasn’t until today that I realized what I wanted to do!

Friday was one of my favorite memories at WAVY. I went out with reporter, KaMaria Braye. I attended the Trump rally at the Historic Greenbrier Farms in Chesapeake. I learned how interviews play a huge role in a story. After KaMaria’s first live shot, she went in the van and started typing her web post. When she got back on air, she interviewed a Trump supporter who arrived at 10:30 p.m. She changed her title and angle of her post, because he was the first one to arrive. Also, I learned to let the scene tell the story and direct the shot to what is behind me.

I did another stand up and the photographer, LV, made me feel so comfortable. It was a struggle arriving at the station by 3 a.m., but it was all worth it. I am confident that one day I will be a local news reporter!

During the week, I shadowed Mal in the control room for The Hampton Roads Show. Mal is the director and codes what the producers send. I enjoyed learning how the two roles play a part in producing a successful show. Changes can happen any minute, so it’s important to remain focused and not miss any time cues. At my orientation, I was shocked to find out that the studio cameras are robotic. I shadowed Daryl for the midday show. He taught me how to run cameras and read the rundown.

I am blessed that I am gaining hands on experience. The sky is the limit and I am excited for my future journalism career!
