PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — As the weeks have gone by interning at WAVY-TV 10, I’ve gotten into the groove of things. I have a usual routine, with different tasks sprinkled throughout the day. Usually, I come in, write scripts and edit videos. However, working in sports and news means there is always something exciting going on.
This month is the slowest when it comes to local sports coverage as there is not much going on. However, this provides an opportunity to branch out and cover different sports. I pitched the idea of covering the Virginia Beach Big Tuna Tournament, and it became a fun feature package to show. It’s really amazing that even as an intern I am listened to, and my ideas are taken into consideration.
We also went and interviewed Brandon “Butterbean” Queen, who is a prominent racer in the area and a three times Langley Speedway Champion. He is probably the most famous person I’ve gotten to talk to, and it makes it even better that he was so nice. It’s interviews like these that remind me why I’m in this business.
This week, I started working in the news department as well. I learned how to work the assignment desk and create the rundowns for the entire day. It was little overwhelming at first, but it was super interesting to see how the newsroom runs outside of sports.
I also got to meet with the father of an NBA draft pick and watch the interview in the studio. I got to show him around and talk with him one on one.
One of the coolest parts of this internship is just seeing how the show I’ve been watching since I was a kid is done behind the scenes.
