WILMINGTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A home on the coast is setting a new record for the largest sale to date in North Carolina’s history, according to a custom home builder.

J. Long Custom Homes said their clients’ 6,700-square-foot luxury beach mansion on Figure Eight Island near Wilmington just sold for $13.9 million.

They said the home, located on Beach Road South, has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

“This transaction marks the most expensive home sale in North Carolina’s history, underscoring the surging demand for high-end coastal properties,” they said in a news release.

J. Long Custom Homes said they custom-built the home in 2019. They said it was the last home designed by the late architect, John Stirewalt, in his 40-year career on Figure Eight Island, which is home to some of the most famous people in the United States.

“We are thrilled to have been part of such a historic record-breaking sale,” said Jason Long, Owner and General Contractor of J. Long Custom Homes.

According to the company, the original home on the property was sold to a neighbor for $1 and was relocated overnight to make way for the new construction.

“This relocation, conducted between 2 a.m. and 6:28 a.m., not only preserved the original structure but also minimized waste and embodied J. Long Custom Homes’ dedication to environmental stewardship,” they said.

J. Long Custom Homes tells CBS 17 the luxury real estate market along the North Carolina coast has been booming, with more and more sales of oceanfront properties listing and selling for millions.

In 2023 alone, they said eight homes in New Hanover County sold for more than $5 million, with two properties on Figure Eight Island reaching top prices.
