CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — Hatteras and Ocracoke islands face cell phone and internet disruptions, which may include limited 911 service, due to a fiber optic cable that was cut Monday afternoon south of the Marc Basnight Bridge that caused the outage, according to the Dare County Sheriff’s Office.

The communications outage was reported around 2:30 p.m., and per multiple reports, the fiber optic cable cut appears to be near the Pea Island Visitor Center, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative, the outage is not affecting the power grid, and the island is not experiencing any power outages.

There was no estimated time for restoration as of 3 p.m. Monday, but a repair crew has been dispatched.

Anyone who needs emergency services or communications in the Hatteras and Ocracoke island areas are advised to go to their nearest volunteer fire department, with stations located in Hatteras, Frisco, Buxton, Avon, Ocracoke and Rodanthe.
