CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Anyone who’s within six months of their 20th birthday can apply to become a police officer trainee with the Chesapeake Police Department.
With the age requirement lowered to 19½, candidates have the chance to graduate from the police academy and become sworn Chesapeake police officers before their 21st birthday, allowing for an earlier start to a public safety career.
“This initiative empowers young adults to take a proactive role in caring for their community,” said Chesapeake Police Chief Mark Solesky in a statement. “We’re excited to help them get a jump start on their career in public service.”
The Chesapeake Police Department said it offers the following for police officer trainees:
- A robust paid training program led by law enforcement experts
- Competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits
- Opportunities for career advancement in specialized units, leadership roles, and more
Applicants are required to meet all other qualifications to become a police officer trainee, including passing a physical ability test, background check and other assessments during the hiring process.
