NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After seven people were initially taken into custody following a barricade situation Sunday morning, five of them were arrested and charged with discharging a gun in public, according to police. Two others were released.

10 On Your Side spoke on the phone with one of the individuals after he was released. He recounted waking up from the couch to police commands.

At around 4:20 a.m., Norfolk Police responded to the intersection of Grandy Avenue and Cape Henry Avenue in reference to a gunshot disturbance.

One neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she heard multiple gunshots and then heard banging on her front door from police telling her she needed to leave her house.

A preliminary investigation revealed the gunshots were coming from Cape Henry Avenue.

“It was kind of scary because it’s like a little too close to home,” said the neighbor.

Police then crawled through her side window.

“They climbed down, and he was like, ‘we come in here on this side because it’s the active shooter and we want to try to get you and your mom out of the house.’ So, it was about four or five of them in my house. One was upstairs because my bathroom looks right into their backyard.”

During this time Norfolk Police reported on X they were on scene for a barricade situation.

“I was like, ‘my mom is not going to go out of the window.’ And so, they surrounded me and my mom and walked us over to my neighbor’s house for safety because of the active shooter.”

While she was at her neighbor’s house, her camera captured video of police with guns drawn in front of her house and in the backyard. She said during this time, police, SWAT and the Norfolk Bomb Squad had another neighbor’s house surrounded.

“They were still trying to tell him to come out, you know, come out with his hands up. And they didn’t want to hurt them, nothing like that. So, then he started shooting again and then he turned the music up.”

That neighbor said she has never talked to the owner of the house.

“I’ve never actually seen him or met him because you don’t hear anything from him through the week. But every other week, they are always shooting, and they play the music all loud.”

Seven people were taken into custody without incident. At least one of those people have already been released.

10 On Your Side spoke on the phone to one of the seven individuals taken into custody. He told us he woke up on the couch and there was a truck with an intercom parked outside the residence telling everyone inside to exit with their hands up. The front door was already opened when he said he walked out with his arms up.

He also told 10 On Your Side he was not charged with anything but was unsure about the other six individuals who were taken into custody. Police have not confirmed yet if anyone was charged.

No injuries were reported.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
