NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) —

People across Hampton Roads and across the country are gearing up for holiday travel, as AAA is reporting that 80 million people are all going somewhere.

Norfolk International Airport is business as usual as travelers head to their Thanksgiving holiday destination, and it has reported no issues during the holiday season.

“It’s actually been smooth this morning,” said Marquisha Cooper, who was at the airport Wednesday to fly to Jacksonville, Florida. “I’m really excited because I got here late. I went through the gates easily, so I’m excited.”

She hasn’t seen her grandmother in five years and is looking forward to a good time.

“It’s a lot of fun, a lot of giving, a lot of everyone coming together, eating,” she said. “It’s like a big old party, really.”

Nate Carlisle, who flew into Norfolk from Atlanta and is looking forward to some deviled eggs for Thanksgiving, said his travels Wednesday were also smooth on both ends of his trip.

“Everything took off on time, [and] traffic wasn’t bad in Atlanta,” Carlisle said. “Everything was great, so thumbs up for right now.”

“Yeah, very smooth,” said traveler Connor Micklos Tuesday. “I mean, I’ve always come here for flights, so super easy to get in and out.”

Jeff Zampi and his family came to Norfolk from Detroit to see extended family. He, too, reported no issues with flying Wednesday.

“Every TSA person, I think, was working today, so it was super easy to fly through,” Zampi said.

And those coming to Norfolk later Wednesday likely saw smooth conditions as well.

“It is actually pretty calm today,” said airport ambassador Terry Kelly. “There are no extra flights, no added flights, but every flight that is here is booked solid, so I’m telling people to get to your gate early, check-in, ’cause if it’s accidentally oversold, you don’t want to be the last one there.”

Traveler Evan Monger. who arrived in Norfolk Tuesday, said even though the Mermaid City’s airport is smaller than ones he typically uses, he saved money by doing so.

“It was really interesting,” Monger said. “I mean, I really liked it. This was one of the smaller airports that I’ve been to. It’s been more quick and efficient, I think. And [compared to] where I normally live, it’s saved me like a hundred bucks or so. So it’s a little bit cheaper.”

Monger and Micklos are back in Hampton Roads in time for a Thanksgiving feast, with the Micklos family reunited for a holiday break after a few months apart.

“It was really nice getting to see [mom] since I haven’t seen her in a while,” Micklos said. “So it’s really nice to get to see the rest of the family soon too.”

Said Cindy Micklos: “… It was good to finally see him. We don’t get to see him very often since Illinois is a long drive. When we go see him, it’s 14 hours to get there, so it was really nice to finally have him home for Thanksgiving, even though it’s only for four days.”

The airport advises travelers to plan ahead and double-check flight information before taking off, something Monger said is a good idea.

“I say plan beforehand, don’t do it last minute and have a straight idea of what you want to do, and also, save up some money,” Monger said.

Also remember, if you’re bringing food back from your trip, the Transportation Security Administration says whole pieces of food, such as turkey, can clear the checkpoints, but when it comes to cranberry sauces, jams or spreads, leave it in the checked baggage.
