NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk family that has eight children lost everything in a fire Friday morning in the Ocean View area.

All of the people inside at the time were able to escape the burning home in the 200 block of E. Ocean Avenue. Firefighters didn’t specify how many people were inside when the fire broke out, but said no injuries were reported.

The fire was called in at 9:25 a.m., and firefighters said it was under control around 10:25 a.m. They were still working to extinguish hot spots around noon.

A pastor at the nearby Ocean View Lighthouse Church says he knows the family, which includes eight children. The kids’ father was out of town.

“It’s a mom with eight kids that just lost everything,” said Pastor Jim Knarr. “It just makes me want to cry.”

Knarr said the family lost everything in the fire and the church will be setting up a collection to help.

“We already have members of church who are already on the phone, trying to line up where we can get them some clothes, get them some toys, help the mom out,” said Knarr. “We just want to make sure they’re taken care of.”

The Ocean View Lighthouse Church is located at 234 E. Bay Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23503

The cause of the fire is still unclear at this time. Check back for updates.
