PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive on his cell bunk on Saturday.
According to the HRRJ Superintendent, an officer making security rounds found 60-year-old Tomas Clements Jones lying on his cell bunk, unresponsive around 3:20 a.m.
The officer immediately called for medical assistance. Jail and medical staff administered CPR until Portsmouth EMS arrived. Around 3:42 a.m., Jones was pronounced dead, according to HRRJ.
Jones was serving a one year and six months sentence from a probation violation imposed by the Norfolk Circuit Court, a concurrent one year and six months sentence from a probation violation imposed by the Portsmouth Circuit Court and a one month sentence for trespassing, imposed by the Portsmouth General District Court.
The incident is under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Department and the HRRJ is conducting an administrative review.
