VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The design for the new city hall in Virginia Beach is in, and it looks a lot like the old one.

That’s actually what city council wanted.

The new building will be in the same colonial style as the rest of the buildings in the complex, but it is going to be one and half times larger then the current building.

On Tuesday, city council will experience a virtual reality walkthrough. So they’ll up the stairs and inside the offices spaces — even into a council meeting through the eyes of a person walking through.

Facilities Manager Tom Nicholas says the current city hall building has long been too small, and is filled with asbestos.  That’s why they decided to build a whole new facility as opposed to renovating the old one.

The design is pretty final, Nicholas told WAVY.com on Monday, and there’s already been a lot of input from council and the public.

The plan is to break ground next June and to open the new building the following June, so just about two years from now it will be open.
