PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia health officials reported 473 new COVID-19 cases and 8 new deaths linked to the disease on Monday morning.
Virginia now has 5,747 cases overall, with 149 deaths and 903 cumulative hospitalizations, per the Virginia Department of Health.
The increase of 473 new cases between Sunday and Monday is the second highest one day increase so far, with Saturday’s increase of 568 being the highest. On Sunday just 197 new cases were reported.
After reporting 34 new deaths linked to the coronavirus on Thursday, April 9, Virginia has averaged around 10 deaths per day since. Of the 149 deaths reported, 143 were people ages 50 and older, 100 of which were those 70 and older.
1 person aged 20-29 and another aged 30-39 have also died. Here’s a breakdown of the number of the percentage of cases and deaths.

Thursday: 397 new cases to 4,042 overall/34 new deaths to 109 overall
Friday: 467 new cases to 4,509 overall/12 new deaths to 121 overall
Saturday: 568 new cases to 5,077 overall/ 9 new deaths to 130 overall
Sunday: 197 new cases to 5,274 overall/ 11 new deaths to 141 overall

765 people are currently hospitalized statewide with confirmed COVID-19, per the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, 428 are in the ICU and 302 are on ventilators. 473 patients are also hospitalized with pending COVID-19 results.
