NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Suffolk man was in the right place at the right time to rescue a driver before his car caught fire.
10 On Your Side reported the accident Thursday morning on I-664 in Newport News. A driver lost control and hit the Jersey wall.
Another driver who saw the car in front of him swerving, put on his hazards and pulled over to help.
“As I’m running up to the car I do get a slight hint of gas, then I start panicking, like I’ve got to get this guy out of the car,” Brian Whitney told WAVY.com. “I go to pull the door open and it’s like clamped shut I don’t know if it bent in or something … so I just ripped the door open … he was really dazed and confused, air bags deployed, he’s bleeding from his forehead.”
Whitney said he threw the man’s arm over his shoulder and dragged him out moments before the car caught fire.
State police told 10 On Your Side the man refused treatment on scene.
There’s no word yet on what caused him to crash or any possible charges.
