VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Chic’s Beach is one of the last public beaches suffering from erosion that hasn’t been addressed.
However, that won’t be for long.
Chic’s Beach is getting more sand through a nearly $5 million project that coastal manager Phil Roehrs says is way overdue.
“As the beach continues to erode and homes get damaged, it has an effect on the value of the community, it has an effect on the quality of life, during some high tides, you’re unable to recreate on this beach,” says Roehrs.
Many of the locals who spoke with 10 On Your Side say they are looking forward to the sand replenishment.
“I think it’s a great idea, it’s going to make my haul to the water with my kayak a little longer but I don’t mind that one bit,” said local Terry Shields.
10 On Your Side found out not everyone has been onboard with the project.
Roehrs says some underwater property owners sued, claiming it was a private beach.
He says the lawsuit was resolved back in 2016, ruling it was indeed public.
He says the sand replenishment will make a big impact.
“Make it wider and higher, provide storm damage protection and to enhance the recreational beach,” he explained.
Roehrs says this won’t prevent you from being able to go.
“The beach won’t be closed, there’s a small work zone that moves, so behind it will be a wide open beach open to the public,” he added.
He says that means homeowners won’t suffer from the construction for more than a day or two in each zone.
Roehrs says the contractor is coming in with the equipment later in April.
Then, sand will start coming in early May.
