NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After a double shooting at Tidewater Gardens on Friday evening, local community activists came together in hopes of stopping the violence.

“We’re supposed to help one another. It’s resurrection Sunday. We’re supposed to be out here helping one another not destroying one another,” said activist James Washington.

They took to the streets to talk to people who live in the area, encouraging citizens to take a stand.

10 On Your Side talked to people who live here, and they say they’re worried about their children’s safety now more than ever.

“We want to ask them questions. Where do your interests lie here? What are your concerns?” explained local activist Bilal Muhammad.

Muhammad has been working to bring awareness to communities for decades.

He goes out into local communities to get them to join together to stop crimes from happening.

“I would like to say to the public these residents that live out here, they need to take a stand with us. It’s time for a reform position now,” said Muhammad.

Muhammad says Easter is a special day, a perfect time for the community to come together against violence.

He says this is a call for action, and he won’t stop until the violence does. “Take a stand with us so that the children, the seniors will have a better place to live in the future.”
