NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police said five people were shot on Wednesday night. One of the victims was a 1-month-old child.
The call came in around 10:15 p.m. reporting the shooting in the 800 block of E. Princess Anne Road.
Police said the child’s injuries are life-threatening. They were taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.
The four adults sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. They are expected to be OK.
No suspect information is available at this time.
On Wednesday, Police Chief Larry Boone released a video giving additional details on the incident. Police had originally said only four people including the child were injured, but Boone announced the number was four adults and one child Wednesday afternoon.
He said the 1-month-old child is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
“We have a human being that has barely been on this earth for 30 days and they are already a statistic of gun violence. what a horrible first impression of what life can be like in this world,” Boone said.
Boone continued: “Unfortunately, in some cases, it appears that the community has become desensitized to this type of shooting. Just three months ago, Hampton Roads, our nation, countries around the world joined together for mostly peaceful protests to highlight police reform, community policing and disparities that exponentially affect Black and brown people.”
Boone went on to say despite those outcries that led the movement for social justice this spring and summer, Norfolk is again facing senseless gun violence.
Boone is asking for actionable partnerships to mentor youth, as well as to support employment and educational opportunities, in an effort to prevent this type of gun violence.
