SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A project to address water seepage at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel has been completed early.

In a news release, the Virginia Department of Transportation said engineers designed a solution to groundwater seeping onto the roadway by redirecting the water into the tunnel’s existing drainage system.

VDOT said seeping water has long been a nuisance on the connector, contributing to potholes and requiring crews to treat the road during cold weather to keep it from freezing.

Contractors began work on the bridge-tunnel in February and finished in early May — more than one week ahead of schedule. Inspectors have found no evidence of seepage since the work’s completion, VDOT said.

VDOT is planning to repave the areas near the tunnel’s openings at a later date.
