YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police said a crash on Interstate 64 was confirmed to be fatal Thursday night.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes near mile-marker 244. Traffic cameras show the crash is close to the York County-James City County line.
The call reporting the crash came in around 6:30 p.m.
A 2016 Nissan Versa was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed in the left lane when it struck a guardrail. It lost control, crossed over all travel lanes, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.
The vehicle then caught on fire and became fully engulfed. Video of the crash submitted by a WAVY viewer showed the vehicle on fire in the trees.
Police said the driver died upon impact.
At some point during the incident, the Nissan lost a tire. The tire flew through the woodline and hit a Honda CRV that was traveling on Merrimac Trail (Route 143), which runs parallel to the interstate in that area.
The driver of the CRV was not injured, but the SUV was towed due to disabling damage.
Police say identification of the Nissan’s driver has not been made because the vehicle caught on fire and was fully engulfed.
Identification of the driver will be made by the medical examiner’s office.
Eastbound travel lanes reopened by 10:20 p.m., VDOT said.
