Chris Reckling

Emmy-award winning reporter and anchor Chris Reckling joined the crew of The Hampton Roads Show in September 2012 after anchoring weekend sports for WAVY and FOX 43 since 1993.

His first job in television was at WECT in Wilmington, N.C. where Chris worked as a photographer, reporter and sports anchor.

Chris joined WAVY TV in November 1989 as a photographer, but quickly established himself as a reporter.

Working as a “one man band,” Chris introduced himself to viewers in Hampton Roads with his popular feature Carolina Country. The weekly feature spotlighted unique people, places and events in Northeastern North Carolina. Carolina Country ran for three years and was named the top feature in the state of Virginia by the Associated Press.

From college bowl games, major league baseball, the Daytona 500, to NFL playoff games, Chris has covered the full gamut of sports.

Since joining the sports team at WAVY and WVBT, Chris has earned numerous awards including an Emmy for his work on Old Dominion’s return to football in 2009. Chris has been named “Hampton Roads Outstanding Sports Broadcaster” by the Chesapeake Athletic Club twice and in 1999 was named Hampton Roads’ top sportscaster by the readers of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper.

Chris enjoys speaking engagements and recently was named the Coastal Virginia Wine Fest Grape Stomp Champion in 2014.

A photographer first, Chris still shoots, edits and produces the majority of his stories.

Despite putting most of his effort into covering sports in Hampton Roads, Chris is quick to jump in and help the news department during big news events. Whether it be tornado coverage or hurricanes, Chris has been on the scene of some of our communities biggest news stories. In 2009 Chris went to Nicaragua to report on a local men’s group called HOLA and their efforts to help the orphans of Managua.

Chris became co-host of The Hampton Roads Show is 2011. Since joining HRS, his work has brought awareness to important community events and has helped raised thousands of dollars for numerous non-profit organizations. His weekly feature, “Reck on the Road” shines a light on the colorful people, places and events that make his hometown so special. In 2018, Chris flew with The United States Air Force Thunderbirds and pulled 9 G’s in the backseat of an F-16. He did not get sick, but felt awful later stuck in I-64 traffic!

Chris is a Hampton Roads native. Born in Norfolk and raised in Virginia Beach, he is a graduate of Princess Anne High School. He was named a high school football and baseball All-American during his days at Princess Anne. Chris received his Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia Tech where he also played both football and baseball.

Chris has two sons – Cameron and Casey.

Chris still calls Virginia Beach home and on his days off he can be found fishing or paddling around in the ocean surfing with his buddies.
