Nick Broadway joined WAVY in November of 2023 as a reporter, eager to get to know the region and share its stories. He joins the team after six years as a weekend anchor and reporter at WDAY in Fargo, North Dakota. While he misses its community, he is not upset about trading the six-month winters for a warmer, coastal climate.
Nick started his career at KVRR in Fargo as an intern while studying Broadcast Journalism at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He worked full-time as a weekend anchor and reporter at KVRR for a year and a half after graduating in 2016.
Nick reported live for several hours in clouds of tear gas when riots hit the streets of Downtown Fargo in 2020, helping secure an Emmy for the wall-to-wall coverage at WDAY. When war broke out in Ukraine, he told the stories of multiple families who took refuge in Minnesota. He also interviewed the family of an American who was jailed in Ukraine, continuing this coverage until he was released back to the US.
Nick was frequently seen reporting live from blistering blizzard conditions and is ready to trade those -30 degree live shots for the occasional round of hurricane coverage. Nick has covered all beats — from crime and politics to the lighthearted and uplifting stories.
Though Virginia may seem far from his previous home, most of Nick’s family lives throughout the Carolinas and Georgia. He met his wife Kate while in Minnesota and married her in 2016. She too has lots of family up and down the east coast. They have a Tibetan Spaniel named Leo, and their leopard gecko, Rocky.
Prior to working in news, Nick spent three years in the college radio world while attending MSUM. He and his wife studied abroad for one year in Shanghai, China.
