Ricky Matthews

Ricky is excited to return to Hampton Roads to join the Super Doppler 10 Weather Team.  He was born in Newport News and lived in Hampton, attending Kecoughtan High School, before leaving to get his meteorology degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

After graduation, Ricky worked at WCYB, the NBC and FOX affiliate in Bristol, VA.

He is excited to use his knowledge of hurricanes, Hampton Roads weather patterns and the local geography to help keep the community safe and informed. He has vivid memories of the impacts from Hurricane Isabel in 2003, the April 2011 tornadoes and the November Nor’easter in 2009. In June of 2012, Ricky watched as a tornado crossed the James River and impacted Downtown Hampton. He was in downtown shortly after, witnessing the damage firsthand.

Besides weather, Ricky’s other passion is aviation. He has been a private pilot for over 10 years, having learned from his Grandfather who spent 30 years in the USAF flying F-4s during Vietnam. Ricky loves to watch airplanes fly, so there’s a good chance you may find him near an airport or at the Oceana airshow each year.

When he’s not flying airplanes, you can find him out biking, exploring our many wonderful beaches or shooting video with his drone.

Ricky lives in Newport News with his wife Allison and their dog, Forrest.
