Shelby Cobra replica from “Bad Boys” heads to auction

While most fans associate the Porsche 911 Turbo owned by Will Smith’s character Mike Lowrey with the 1995 hit film “Bad Boys,” there was also an equally memorable car in the film: a Shelby Cobra.

Now a car alleged to be one of two Cobras used for filming has surfaced as a lot for Mecum’s auction taking place next month in Kissimmee, Florida.

The Cobra was used by the film’s villain, Fouchet, played by Tchéky Karyo. Fans of the movie will recall that Fouchet crashes the car at the end of the film. That wrecked example was a stunt car, whereas the car up for sale was the hero example used for most of the filming, according to Mecum.

Allegedly, the car remained with a single owner after filming wrapped up, and the owner kept it in dry storage all this time. It is actually an original Kellison Stallion-built car, of which 117 were made between 1976 and 1980. Power comes from a Ford 351 Cleveland V-8, but instead of a manual, there’s an automatic transmission with a Hurst shifter.

Per the listing, the car was acquired from South Beach Classics, a collector car dealership that also specializes in rentals for filming. Included with the sale are documents purported to authenticate the car as the “Bad Boys” Cobra, such as an original certificate of insurance from the producer, Columbia Pictures, with a reference to the “Bad Boys” movie, an original 1099 form issued from Columbia Pictures to South Beach Classics, and a copy of a registration made out to Columbia Pictures.

Mecum also sold the hero 911 Turbo from “Bad Boys” only two years ago. The car ended up fetching a winning bid of $1.3 million, which resulted in a final selling price of $1.43 million when taking into account the buyer’s commission.

The Cobra replica is lot S201 for Mecum’s upcoming Kissimmee auction, which is scheduled for Jan. 7-19. It won’t be the only movie car going under the hammer. One of the Porsche 917s used for the Steve McQueen iconic movie “Le Mans” will also be sold in Kissimmee.
