Like many Duke fans, Anna Fritz spent her Sunday among a sea of blue cheering on her alma mater.
“We’ve had some intense games, but it’s exciting to watch them,” Fritz said. “If you have any connection to Duke and Duke basketball, you will find a connection anywhere amongst Duke fans wherever you are.”
Fans packed Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in Durham to watch Duke and Michigan State battle for a spot in the Final Four. For PJ Jayanty, March Madness is a special time filled with memories.
“I’ve loved Duke since I’ve been out of the crib,” Jayanty said. “I went to the 2015 National Championship game against Wisconsin. That was a neat feeling, because I was there with my brother. That was one thing we both will never forget.”
He and others planned on watching the game.
“I’m just concentrated, walking around the house and trying to send good energy to the team,” Duke Senior Sera Pekel said.
But no matter the outcome, students and fans said they’re proud of their Blue Devils and are looking forward to next season.
“I think college basketball really unites schools and students, in general,” Duke Senior Anna Araujl said. “I think that it creates school spirit, and even though teams are playing against each other, there’s always this sense of belonging.”
