My internship at Wavy just keeps getting better and better. Over the past two weeks, I have met my favorite comedian, shadowed an assignment desk manager and editor, and had the opportunity to interview my favorite anchors.

As part of my internship I have had the opportunity to be on set of The Hampton Roads Show every morning. In just two short months, I have met so many fascinating people. However, last week, I met my favorite comedian Ali Saddiq. To say I was overwhelmed with happiness is an understatement. He even commented on my shoes.

Then, I had the opportunity to shadow Mike Akin, a very talented and very amusing assignment desk manager. He told me what it is like day to day as an assignment desk manager. And, he taught me how to make a budget, sort through press releases, and how to upload video from the anchor’s live feed. I even got to do a mic check for Kayla while she was out in the field! Shadowing Mike has given me more insight into this industry. I’ve always been passionate about journalism, and seeing it from another perspective has only opened doors for me.

I also got to shadow an editor, Craig Marble while he edited clips for The Hampton Roads Show. It was an amazing experience to be able to watch a professional edit. He finished a whole segment in ten minutes and had every shortcut memorized. Me on the other hand, I have to look at my “shortcut cheat sheet” when I edit.

And lastly, my favorite anchors have graciously allowed me to interview them for my final project! So far, I have met with Tom Schaad and Katie Collett for an interview. My goal is to shoot a segment for social media called, Get to Know Your Anchors in 60 Seconds. I asked them each 20 questions in 60 seconds. It was amazing to see their personalities shine through in 60 seconds.

In conclusion, it’s so interesting to see what I’ve learned so far put into action. I can’t wait to see what the next two weeks will bring!
