The end of my internship is about a month away, so now is the time to become a sponge and soak up as much information and experience as you can.

And that’s exactly what I did!

These past two weeks I have been branching outside of social media and becoming a sponge to other jobs at the station.

I got to shadow the digital team at the station. It was really cool to see what they do in digital and how it compares to social media. Social Media and Digital Media are very different from each other in the sense of what is promoted. In social media, we promote people to watch television shows and athletic games. Whereas, digital posts news stories, stream live and non-live videos, listen to police scanners, check on the facts of incoming incidents, etc. I guess it’s the difference in giving you what you want to know versus what need to know.

I also got a chance to practice my standup. I worked the 1 am shift. That was hell because I normally don’t stay up that late. It was really nerve-wrecking. I was there with Kara Dixon and LV. They made me feel better and relaxed. They were really funny and easy to talk too. LV gave great advice and let me pick his brain about his job and how he balances his family life with this shift. Me and Kara bonded through Lana Del Rey and Chick-Fil-A.

These experiences made me feel like a sponge out of water, simply because of how much these two entities differ from each other while still complementing each other.

Social Media helps people feel closer to you, but as a multi-media journalist, posting is like the last thing on the list of things to do. As a social media intern, I already know the importance of it and why it’s so important as a talent as well as a reporter because it keeps the people in the known by posting videos, tweets, pictures, etc. I have the upper hand now to learn a balance between the two.

Knowing that these two things is what now can make or break you as a reporter is really helpful to me. I get to soak up information that is foreign to me and also release the water within me for what I already know.

I still have a lot more to learn in a little bit of time, but I am up for an challenge at this internship.
