As we head into the weekend, Debby is gone but a stationary front will be nearby. This will result in some scattered rain chances through the weekend.

Overall, the weekend should look nicer than the last few days .While we’ll still have the chance for some rain showers and downpours in spots, these will be more common in the afternoon – so they’ll be a lot of dry time to work with if you have any outside plans.

As the front stalls across SE VA/NE NC (basically along the border or just north), we’ll see it be the focal point for some showers and storms in the afternoon both Saturday and Sunday.

With recent rainfall over the past 72 hours, the ground is saturated. So any additional rain could cause flooding, especially in NE NC and parts of the southside where storms could move through slowly. Due to this, a Flood WATCH has been issued for NE NC and Chesapeake, VB, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk through today.

This morning, there may still be some residual water/tidal flooding in the Back Bay/Pungo area of VB as a result of the southerly winds yesterday. The tide gauge in Creeds along the North Landing River is still reporting a level of minor flood stage. At this stage, Pungo Ferry Road is usually covered in some water. The water should go away later this afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Alright, let’s talk about the tropics. Debby is long gone now, but we’re turning our attention to another tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic that has a high chance of development over the next week. This system would be named Ernesto.

As to where it would go, the long term model data shows that it will track west. From there, the track gets a little bit more uncertain as we go into next weekend. I don’t feel confident saying one way or another where it will go yet. We should watch it for sure – as the strength of the high pressure in the Atlantic could determine it’s path.

BTW- if Ernesto sounds familiar, you may remember the impacts from Ernesto in 2006 across VA/NC. Parts of our region saw 10″ of rain!

More on this system over the next few days. Hope you have a great weekend!
