The past few weeks at the station have been my favorite so far! Not only do I love learning new things in the sales department, but I also enjoy experiencing what every other department have to offer.
I have spent a lot of time in the news department lately and can say without a doubt, the news team works incredibly hard to provide the best news and information for the people of Hampton Roads. It really is a team effort. They all must work together and push each other to their highest potential to create the #1 news station in the area.
I have always been a numbers person and never felt a passion for writing however; I felt a rush after spending time with a producer. The fast pace environment a producer must face along with being creative in their writing is thrilling. I have visited other departments but I was given challenges as much as in newsroom. The producer new it was my first day and still had my help write teasers and change any writing that I believed could be written better. I was nervous but I am thankful they believed in me enough even when I didn’t.
My day spent with the promotions department was also enlightening. I am currently studying marketing in college now and was glad when I could apply what I have learned in school to what the promotions department does everyday.
A couple weeks ago I went out on my first appointment with a prospective client. We asked them many questions, such as what their goals are for the future. It was a great experience and now the team at WAVY-TV will put together a campaign to help this business reach the goals we identified in our meeting.
What I love most about this internship is that I am not sitting around observing but I am participating and interacting with the staff. The summer is almost over and I am sad to leave the station but am excited to see what else I will learn over these last couple weeks.
