PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Hello everyone! John Eldridge here again, an intern with the Hampton Roads Show here at WAVY-TV 10. I just finished my fifth week with the company, and I feel that I’ve learned a lot in such a short period of time. From becoming more comfortable in my floor directing role during the show to my duties post-show, including writing posts to go on the web (such as this one,) and doing a number of things for the upcoming shows prior to their air date.
In terms of the show itself, I am definitely getting better at mic-ing up guests, arranging the studio and generally running the show to the best of my abilities. It helps to have such an experienced group around me. We all work well together as a team and it helps me to feel more comfortable with the overall environment and my confidence in my work. I’m expecting this to only get better with time since I’ve already improved so much in this overall short period of time.
Post-show, meanwhile, I have done upwards of 10 web posts for the Hampton Roads Show now, and I feel like I learn something new each time. These have ranged from sponsored posts to community connections and other various posts for the segments presented during the show. During the weeks since my initial posts, I feel that my writing and general style have improved, and I can get through the overall process a lot quicker than before. It’s honestly just so great seeing my name on something posted to the web, it is such a great feeling that makes me feel like I’m truly a part of something.
Outside of this, I’ve also been given a lot of responsibility in creating the run-downs for future shows. This includes writing scripts for segments, inserting boards for each individual show, doing supers for specific segments, doing Pet Pal for Thursday shows, and ensuring that the shot meets the segment in terms of who is talking. This has truly been so great to learn more about, and I’m glad that I seem to have built up a lot of trust with everyone in terms of taking care of these sections.
Ultimately, my time with WAVY has been incredible, and I’m so excited to see what comes next. I’m so grateful for this opportunity, and I intend to keep making the most of it. Until next time!
