VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) – In my last blog post, I discussed how the proverbial “light” was on and that I was in the initial stages of my work. Since that time, things have intensified, but in a positive way.
In these last few weeks, the sports team and I have traveled to multiple schools, primarily high schools, where we shot games and interviewed coaches and players. I already knew about the process of shooting, interviewing and cutting sound bytes for a story, but it was great seeing it up close.
After getting the footage we needed, it was time for me to shoot my stand-up shots. Honestly, I had lots of mixed feelings doing those stand-ups, especially given that I had to fill time doing them, and they were, obviously, completely unscripted. To give an honest observation about my first stand-up shot, there was a lot of work that had to be done, and that’s being nice.
A couple of weeks ago, I was really thrown into the fire. In addition to my usual duties of researching and writing for a show, I tasked with writing my first story on WAVY.com. Nonetheless, I can proudly say I got the job done.
Fast-forward to a couple of nights ago, we’re shooting a couple of high school basketball games at Norfolk State University, and I remembered we were using the “not intern-friendly” camera, but I still got a little bit of experience using it. I thought it would be heavy on me, but it was not as heavy as I thought.
After the games, I observed the process of editing on the fly, and I thought it was really cool. Then, it was time for me to shoot my second stand-up shot. There was a bit of improvement, and once again — that’s being nice.
I feel humbled to be trusted to go into the fire, especially given how passionate I am about this career and the world of sports altogether. Even though things are improving, and I am gaining more confidence about further pursuing a career in this field, I’ve still got work to do.
