PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Well, friends, we are somehow halfway through this experience, and in a matter of weeks, I will have to give a final account of my time here.

Because so much has happened since the last post, I am breaking this post up into two parts, and it may be a little lengthier than usual.

About a week ago, I had the privilege of shadowing the Hampton Roads Show.

When it comes to movies and television programs that I watch, I love a good crossover special. With me working in the sports department, paying a visit to see how things work on the Hampton Roads Show felt exactly like that.

Overall, everything was great over there. I got to see what went on behind the camera and in the control room, and I experienced how everyone over there gets the show ready for on air. Also, having steak for breakfast was a major plus.

Now, let us return to my side of the building.

Last week, the 10 p.m. news report and Sportswrap got scrubbed for the State of the Union address. Because of that, I finally did my first anchor read. Honestly, I’ve been looking at it a lot since we shot it. Obviously, it will not be my only anchor read in my time here, but it is enough to look at and improve on before the next one.

This week, we followed the men’s and women’s basketball teams of Norfolk State immensely as they prepared for their runs in the MEAC Tournament.

For the first time in my life, I actually got to cover a major sports tournament. This was something that I had worked extremely hard to do, even at the intern level.

The MEAC Tournament experience culminated with the Norfolk State Women winning the championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. That wasn’t too bad for my first weekend in the office.

In the last three weeks alone, I personally have noticed a lot of growth in my abilities as a sportscaster, and now it is time to discover my own identity in this industry. I’ve still got work to do.
