First-Day Feels
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – I am Neveah Braswell, a senior Mass Communications major at Norfolk State University. Stepping into the WAVY-10 studio for the first time as an intern for The Hampton Roads Show was a mix of nervous excitement. I knew this experience would be a major stepping stone toward my dream career in media, but the thought of working in a professional television studio was both thrilling and a little intimidating. One of my favorite moments was getting my badge after orientation and finally using it at the front gate. The way it opened felt like I was driving into a mansion—it was a surreal moment that made me feel like I was exactly where I was meant to be. From that point on, I knew I was making the best decision for my future.
So Much to Do, So Many People to Meet
In just one month, I’ve already had the chance to do so much. I’ve been on television, networked with incredible professionals, and built connections with my fellow interns as we share this journey together. One of the highlights has been meeting the amazing guests who come on the show—learning about their stories, their businesses, and even getting to taste some of the delicious dishes featured in the kitchen segment! I decided early on to make the most of this opportunity by jumping in wherever I could, saying yes to everything, and getting hands-on experience. On my very first day, I ran the teleprompter for the entire morning news broadcast, and once I earned the chance to operate the camera, I’ve been handling them for the first two news broadcasts of the day. Every day brings something new, and I’ve learned that this experience is truly what we make of it.
Excited for What’s Next
I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity to learn and grow in a hands-on environment. Whether it’s behind the scenes with the production team, talking to guests or even stepping in front of the camera, I want to absorb everything this experience has to offer. My time at school has given me a strong foundation in production, but this internship is helping me expand my skills in ways I never imagined. I can’t wait to continue this journey, gaining more knowledge and confidence with each passing day.
