Summer Sports Intern Blog #3

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – It’s been another exciting two weeks working in the sports department here at WAVY TV 10. There have been a lot of slow days, since we’re in the slowest season of the year when it comes to sports, but it’s amazing to see what the reporters make out of these days to provide content.

Virginia Beach has a semi-professional Box Lacrosse team. The talent ranges from high school players, to D1 athletes, to a father and son duo, to players missing time for the Olympics in their respective countries. These types of shoots are gems, small sports with a big impact creates an engaging and heartfelt feature story. We interviewed players and collected B-Roll for the package. I also got to shoot the stand-up for the reporter, which required me to move the camera and follow him. It made me feel like I was really part of the project. It ended up being one of my favorite packages I’ve helped out on.

Continuing with sports, we also went to gather highlights for the Virginia Beach United and Lionbridge FC USL2 league matchup. We did a live shot for the 6pm show, where I learned how the live-packs work and how a live shot is done from the on-site perspective. Then, we stayed for the entirety of the game and for post-game interviews. It was very hot outside, but that didn’t stop me from having a fun time. Not only did I learn a lot, but I got to enjoy an exciting rivalry matchup up close.

Since it was so slow, I also helped out at the web desk and did some tasks for them. I helped create and edit the excel sheet holding all of the stories from the day. I didn’t know WAVY posted so many stories from outside of Hampton Roads, and it helped me understand which articles are most important versus the local ones. I also helped edit headlines to fit on the homepage of the WAVY website. That made me understand a lot more about writing headlines and keeping things concise.

Another new thing I did this week was work the Hampton Roads Show. I got to help mic guests, prepare the set, and spend more in-depth time in the production room.

The Blue Bell ice cream team came in, and we got to be among the first people to try their new ice cream flavor. It was one the most fun days I’ve had here, and I learned so much in just a few hours.

It was another super fun two weeks at WAVY, and it’s bittersweet how close we are to the end of the program.
