PORTSMOUTH, Va (WAVY) – Wow! What a journey! I can’t believe that I am already at the end of my internship at WAVY TV 10. I remember my first day rushing to get to Portsmouth from Chesapeake and being out of breath when I finally made it. When I looked around the facility, I saw an array of wonderful staff, interns and just a place that screamed entertainment. I always remembered me being a little kid watching the news with my grandmother and mother. If my grandmother could see me now, I know she would be proud for me working at the same place that she watched all the time.
Coming into the internship, I really didn’t know what to expect. A young kid at Old Dominion who’s still trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. Does he want to be a sports marketer? Does he want to work in media? Could he find a role somewhere in cinematic production? When Mike Booth gave me the opportunity to work in promotions, it was an offer I couldn’t deny. I was kind of frightened with the large packet Ms. Cooke gave us at orientation, but it all came together.
When I made my first appearance in promotions, they made the office feel like home. Antonio, Eric, Ezra, Michael, Mike, Nicole and Victoria always greeted me and made sure I was alright whenever I was in need. They showed me how they write scripts, how they film their promos, how their promos air and taking notes at the morning meetings.
I also had fun in all the other departments where I got a bit of knowledge from everyone: Brian, Craig and James in sports, Kenisha in HRS, Bob and Dana in Newsroom, Madie in Digital, Billy and Marcus in Engineering, Jeff and Steve in Weather, Mary Louise in Sales. They showed me the ins and outs of what they do on a daily basis and how to contribute to the network as a whole.
Finally, I want to give a shout out to all the interns for the Summer session. I didn’t get to know all of them, but I enjoyed being in the companies of those I did get to collaborate with, including Alexis, Daryl, Brendan and Elaine. I’m proud of all of you guys and can’t wait to see how this experience impacted you guys in the future!
