Winding Down! My last days of being a Promotions Intern

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — My time at WAVY-TV 10 is beginning to come to an end. This week we focused on what our final projects will be by next month. Time has flown by so fast and I have met an array of great, intelligent, outgoing, creative and like-minded individuals like myself. I always used to watch WAVY when I was a little boy with his grandmother, but actually having the opportunity to work there has been a surreal experience!

One of my recent, favorite things I got to partake in was assisting Kenisha with the Hampton Roads Show. I got to shadow her and other interns like Alexis and Darryl. I saw how they prepared the set, team collaboration, putting microphones on guests, camera operation and showing me when stuff is aired or scrapped.

Also, Ms. Stringfield allowed me to operate the teleprompter for news anchor Aesia Tolliver! It was way harder than it looks, but I believe I did a decent job for my first time.

Another department that I took a liking to was the sports department! I’ve always had an interest in sports where I’m currently a athletic digital content creator for Old Dominion University and Sportsplug757. Craig Loper assigned me with writing a script for newly drafted Phoenix Sun Ryan Dunn. It gave me a sense of sports journalism which is something I was aware of, but never got the opportunity to do. He had me download highlight videos of Dunn and the Sports intern Elaine showed me how they import them into their broadcast channels.

The engineering department was interesting where Marcus and Billy showed me how live packs transmit live feeds back to the station and how to make cables.

Lastly, I spent time in weather, newsroom and digital. Jeff and Steve showed me how they prepare and construct their daily news forecasts. Bob showed me their television rundown for their daily shows.

Dana showed me live feeds from police precincts to get immediate news. Finally, Madie showed me how digital does their journalism and stories they are assigned to write and give updates on!
